Nui Dat is situated to the NE of the then and now city of Ba Ria in the heart of Viet Cong territory. My husband was there in 1971 so it was really quite something to go to the area where the Aussies were stationed. On May 17th the two battalions of the U.S. 173rd Brigade, the 1st/503rd and the 2nd/503rd flew into the Nui Dat area to commence a sweep of the surrounding countryside. History 1966–1972. Yes, we went to Nui Dat in 2007. Nui Dat is a former 1st Australian Task Force base now part of Ba Ria city in Ba Ria–Vung Tau province, Vietnam. Nui Dat, Ba Ria. Following the establishment of its base at Nui Dat in Operation Hardihood, standing patrols were established outside the base in the evening and clearing patrols sent out every morning and evening along the 12-kilometre (7.5 mi) perimeter. In 1966, when the area was part of the then Phuoc Tuy Province it was the location of a prominent 1 ATF military base in South Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
