Nui Dat is situated to the NE of the then and now city of Ba Ria in the heart of Viet Cong territory. My husband was there in 1971 so it was really quite something to go to the area where the Aussies were stationed. Following the establishment of its base at Nui Dat in Operation Hardihood, standing patrols were established outside the base in the evening and clearing patrols sent out every morning and evening along the 12-kilometre (7.5 mi) perimeter.
