Born in 1920 in the Ukraine, Ivan Kozhedub became the leading Soviet and Allied Ace of WWII. During WWII, Ivan Kozhedub flew 326 combat missions, took part in 126 aerial combats, and achieved 62 kills (in them 22 FW 190 and 18 Ju 87). Kozhedub: I requested a transfer to the front more than once. In late 1942, I was sent to learn to fly a new plane, the Lavochkin LaG-5. Kozhedub joined a military flying school in 1940, and graduated with such high scores, that he was assigned to become an instructor.
