The congregation was founded on Easter Sunday 2009 through the union of seven former congregations. In 1999, Sister Bernie received the Bishop Pilla Leadership Award, honoring those who work for promote social justice, peace and human dignity in the diocese of Cleveland. This book is the story of a small group of Dominican Sisters who came to Ohio from New Jersey in the late nineteenth century to teach in small towns and country schools. Held twice a year, we have hosted this program virtually and in person at different locations where our sisters minister — in Columbus & Akron, Ohio and in New Orleans, Louisiana. Their work expanded and their numbers grew until they formed a new Dominican congregation in Akron, Ohio, whose Motherhouse was named in part for the beauty of their surroundings: Our Lady of the Elms.
